Meta Tag FAQ
Meta Tags are lines of HTML coding that help some search engines list your website. The most basic Meta Tags are used for a description and keywords. More important than Meta Tags, the Title tag of your site should be properly optimized. An example follows: <head> <title>Industrial Widgets, Commercial Widgets - ABC Manufacturing Co.</title> <meta name="description" content="Manufacturer of industrial and commercial widgets specializing in custom brass, copper, gold and silver widgets for the metalworking industry."> <meta name="keywords" content="industrial widgets, commercial widgets, brass widgets, copper widgets, gold widgets, silver widgets, metalworking widgets, widget manufacturer, custom widgets"> </head>
Most search engines will determine your page's ranking by analyzing factors such as the words in a page's text and the number of incoming links to that page. If a search is performed for "blue widgets," the search engine will look for the phrase "blue widgets" on the page and display the sentence the phrase was found in. Some search engine may create a description from the first lines of text on your webpage. If the first lines of text on your webpage are the company address, for example, this will not help you get rankings for your desired keywords. Keyword density, the number of times a keyword appears in the text of your site, is very important to search engines. It is critical to include keywords in your website's copy. Should I optimize every page of my site? Every page on your site should be treated individually when optimizing. Many new SEOs try to get everything on a site's homepage. The "blue widgets" page should have an optimized title tag and content related to blue widgets. The "industrial widgets" page should have a title and text with keywords related to industrial widgets. My competitor's website comes up higher in the search engines, though we have very similar content. Why? When a search engine indexes a website, it will compare the keywords with the actual text on the page (known as keyword density). The more times the keywords appear in the text, the more likely a webpage will come up high in the search engines. If the competitor's keyword density is higher than your website's, chances are this is the reason they are coming up higher. The number of relevant websites linking to yours can also affect rankings. Relevant links is the key-- quality versus quantity. Some directories like Yahoo list websites alphabetically, so ABC Corporation will always appear higher than XYZ Corporation. You may also see a competitor ranked higher if that competitor has purchased a paid listing within a search engine or directory. What is a PICS Tag? The Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS) has established content guidelines for websites to make safe browsing for children easier. By inserting a PICS Tag under your Meta Tags of the of your webpage, browsers with set parental controls can read this coding and tell what type of content your website contains. A PICS tag is easy to create at www.icra.org, The Internet Content Rating Association. The ICRA site will walk you through a simple process to create your tag. All you need to do is select which forms of (if any) violence, nudity, sex and language exist on your website. Your tag is then generated and ready to be inserted into your webpage. If your website does not contain any questionable matter, note that some browsers may be set to refuse websites without PICS tags because the content cannot be easily determined without them. How can I stop search engines from indexing a particular page on my website? The following Meta Tag will tell search engine spiders not to index this particular page: <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX">
